A.R. PENCK

CERAMICS

A.R. Penck is known for his cave symbols and magical constellations of signs. The artist, who expresses his spontaneous creativity through a wide variety of art forms, began working with ceramics in 1987 at Kattrin Kühn's Droysen Ceramics Workshop & Gallery in Berlin.

His relentless search for creative possibilities and his unbridled curiosity led him to ceramics—an elemental art form in which fire, water, earth, and air come together in the act of creation.

For Penck, the most exciting aspect of working with ceramics is pushing the boundaries of the material, expanding the possibilities of the medium to its limits, and embracing the unpredictable transformations that occur during the production process. His figurative painting continually tells new and imaginative stories, and this expressive quality carries over into his ceramic works. Unusual and surprising in their balance of heaviness and lightness, his ceramic pieces are always unique.
