Elger Esser AT ABBEY OF MONT-SAINT-MICHEL, FRANCE

'MÉMOIRE CÉLESTE', 1 APR – 15 JUN 2024

Elger Esser finds inspiration in the natural phenomena that characterize and mold landscapes, including the ebb and flow of tides, tidal bores, and high tides. The Düsseldorf photographer also draws from the cultural and religious history surrounding Saint Aubert, the founder of Mont-Saint-Michel in the 8th century.

During his artistic residency at the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel from 2022 to 2023, Esser cultivated a body of work influenced by nineteenth- and twentieth-century writers like Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, and Marcel Proust.
