A selection of lithographs by Henri Matisse (1869–1954) is currently on view at our newly renovated space, La Oficina, in Palma de Mallorca.
Verve 35–36 a publication, which presents the complete collection of Matisse’s final works, marks a significant event in the world of contemporary art. Before his death in 1954, Matisse prohibited the reproduction of his recent creations, wishing for them to be compiled into a single volume—one that would serve as a definitive representation of this period. Today, this comprehensive testament to the brilliance of the most renowned colorist is offering a deep insight into his collages and drawings. Matisse’s work in his final years embraced a unique form of collage, with the freedom of this medium infusing his vibrant genius with new dimensions and ease. Working relentlessly during this period, he reached a profound expression of his artistic vision.
The first lithograph plates included in this volume were created under Matisse’s direct supervision in 1954, followed by subsequent works completed with the careful oversight of his close friend and publisher, Tériade of Verve. The lithographic plates, in fifteen to twenty color impressions, were printed by Mourlot Frères, while the monochrome heliogravure plates were printed by the master printer Draeger Frères.
