ASTHA BUTAIL AT THE KIRAN NADAR MUSEUM OF ART, NEW DELHI, INDIA

INNER LIFE OF THINGS: AROUND ANATOMIES AND ARMATURES, 26 APR – 28 DEC 2022

In this group exhibition, fifteen artists explore the communication between the animate and the inanimate and the enigmatic life of objects and materials beyond human perception.

Butail’s ‘Of Martand’, a meticulous installation with tiny prototypes of book-like sculptures, embodies ancient methods of archiving and the custom of carrying oral traditions, an exercise that she started back in 2010. Referring to the story of Martand the eighth son of Aditi – an important goddess of Hinduism – the work unfolds by drawing from sources like the ancient hymns of Rig Veda, one of the four sacred canonical Hindu texts.
