The Centre of Contemporary Art _in Torun presents the first retrospective exhibition by Sean Scully in Poland, curated by Krzysztof Stanisławski. 'Painting and Sculpture' offers an overview of the artist's work from 1973 to 2021.
Combining 50 large-format oil and acrylic paintings on canvas or aluminum with 24 works on paper, the exhibition focuses special attention on 12 grand paintings from the Doric series. These paintings have their origin in the way that the artist considers and approaches ancient Greece’s Doric principle in his work creations, providing significant equilibrium and symmetry to the compositions. A multicoloured sculpture will take part in the show, giving the tridimensionality vision between the paintings and the architecture of the space.
In a special tribute to Irena Gut, a Polish woman who suffered a cruel fate in World War II - first at the hands of the Soviets, and then the Germans, Sean Scully created Wall Landline Irena, 2021, a work that will be part of the CoCA collection after the donation by the artist.
