Sean Scully conceived his exhibition 'Insideoutside' in Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden as a dialogue between the park and the architecture of the museum, producing several new indoor and outdoor sculptures on this occasion.
Through numerous preparatory drawings and installation views, the catalogue focuses on Scully’s three dimensional approach that visually translates into stripes, squares and stacks – reflecting the visual lexicon he uses in his abstract paintings – in a vast array of materials such as steel, stone, wood and glass.
“We didn’t know what is was, this colossus of cardboard, but we thought it could be religious. Having loaded a giant van with flattened cardboard boxes, we saw from the end view, as we stood on the street, a beautiful tan coloured abstract painting. Though we also knew, but couldn’t see any longer, that this abstract painting was cubed.”
