Kewenig is delighted to present 'Human', the catalogue of Sean Scully's 2019 exhibition at the Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Opening during the 58th Venice Biennale, the exhibition gathers paintings from Scully's celebrated 'Landline' series as well as the newly figurative 'Madonna' series, alongside especially commissioned works on paper and sculptures, including 'Opulent Ascension', a daring stack of multi-coloured felt frames that raises over ten meter high in the nave of the church.
“Where the paintings of Turner and Monet enchantingly reflect on the exterior grandeur of San Giorgio Maggiore, the array of works assembled by Scully for his show 'Human' reveals a profound synchronicity of instinct with the visual strategies of the church’s internal design – a shared motivation with Palladio to orchestrate transcendence.”
