'Coeur' from 2005 by Christian Boltanski is presented at Espacio 5, a space of the CAC Málaga museum that shows various contributions related to light and darkness. The space is a black cube that manages to create a very special environment.
A recording of Boltanski's heartbeat is accompanied by the synchronous flickering of two light bulbs, symbolising the inexorable passing of time and representing a perpetual movement between life and death. This work was the artist’s beginning to envision his later work ‘ Les Archives du Coeur’ (2008), in which Boltanski collected over 70,000 recordings of heart sounds, stored nowadays in an archive on the uninhabited Japanese island of Teshima. Visitors had then the opportunity to be spectators and participants in the creation at the same time by recording the sound of their own hearts, and being these records consequently part of the artist's archive. This very significant and emotional work by Christian Boltanski can be visited at Espacio 5 until 29 January 2023.
