Entitled ‘Los Límites de lo Posible’, Jose Dávila’s participation in Detrás del Muro during the 13th Habana Biennal consists of a large installation located on the Malecón Habanero, a landmark waterfront bordered by a wall that stretches 8 km along the northern coast of the Cuban capital.
In these new sculptures Dávila combines perfectly shaped recinto blocks with irregular sandstone boulders in seemingly precarious assemblages. The boulders are stacked on recinto blocks at an angle, building a contrast that results in a delicate equilibrium. Using a reduced palette of shapes and materials Dávila composes a poetical installation that embodies the adaptability and collaboration needed to find one’s balance.
