Marcelo Viquez reimagines the Greek myth of 'The Rape of Europa' by appropriating a 19th-century engraving plate.
Working in Julio León's Algaida workshop in Mallorca, Viquez delves into one of art history's most depicted characters, previously explored by artists like Picasso, Rembrandt, Rubens, and Titian. Through a wordplay titled 'El Rap to Europa,' the artist prompts reflection on the cyclical nature of history. The piece delves into Zeus' transformation into a docile white bull and his abducting of Europa from her homeland Phoenicia to the island of Crete, where he reveals his real identity.
