Kewenig Galerie will start the New Year with an extensive exhibition by Christian Boltanski, titled "Zeit" (Time). Through his entire oeuvre, Boltanski has been dealing with issues such as memory, transitoriness, conscience, common history and private biography, which will take shape again in this project. Over the two floors of the gallery the artist will put up six installations.
In the entrance area Christian Boltanski welcomes the visitor with the German word "Tod" ("Death") that he inscribes with electrical bulbs on the wall. Thus prepared, the viewer is led into the main exhibition space, where Boltanski will pay his personal homage to beloved persons in his private life; "Mes Morts" (My Dead), with neon lit metal plaques, thereon enamelled the year of their birth and death. In the centre of the gallery, he will install "Les Appareilles", a large sombre ensemble of container showcases covered with black plastic foil. This sculptural work recalls the aesthetics of Minimal Art and suggests a dialogue of "inside" and "outside". In a further installation, "Contact", Boltanski challenges the viewer's attention and reflection with photo contact sheets: for a clearer vision of the motives, one has to come very close to the dimly illuminated vitrines, thus entering a discourse with the private lives of anonymous persons. It is a method of Boltanski to use a vast collection of imagery that he keeps compiling over the years. These private archives of documents, pictures, clippings undergo a permanent revision and emerge in various works. In the basement vaults, a shadow-play as well as earlier and recent video works by Christian Boltanski will be shown.
