“Uncertainty and enigmatic improbability, but at the same time an almost provocative, seductive sensuality and picturesque, exotic wondrousness characterize the shapes, figures and scenes in the graphic oeuvres of the five artists presented in this exhibition” says Lóránd Hegyi. The characters populating their works are peculiar creations that are almost always changing. Repeatedly, their human countenance gently merges with plants, landscapes or animals, often turning into powerful and wild images referring to fundamental and primal experiences. “In these acts of imagination, what is uncertain, enigmatic and inexplicable acquires a tangible body, a palpable image, a sensual appearance capable of being experienced, all of which aspects bring to light the invisible, obscure levels of existence.”

The narratives of Veronika Holcová, Juul Kraijer, José Antonio Suárez Londoño, Barthélémy Toguo and Sandra Vásquez de la Horra are of course different, and yet the works of these artists in Sur un Terrain Étrange are fundamentally similar. Their language and their subject oscillate between a delicate sensibility and a strong visual power; and the artists themselves show a tireless and often almost manic devotion in the graphic and painterly process. Their striking iconographies have in common, however, the radical liberation of the imagination and the contextualization of their own stories and personal experiences within larger literary, historical or mythological narratives. They embody the fundamental metaphors of human life between everyday life and art, the different approaches to life and death, body and soul, good and evil, fate and coincidence.

A small publication with an essay by Lóránd Hegyi accompanies the exhibition.
