In this post-residency exhibition Marcelo Viquez presents a selection of the works he created at CCA Andratx. The sculptures, paintings, installations and collages on view are symptomatic of the artist’s protean approach.
During his residency Viquez explored the vicinity of the studio to find objects imbued with local history, which he then assembled in works that reflect his personal narrative. These multilayered pieces are strongly evocative, such as a rifle supporting the branches of a tree, or a simple yellow line painted on a large piece of blue tarpaulin. Contrasting with the exhibition title 'The Artist is Always Present', the several skulls that punctuate the show act as a memento mori, reminding us of our own mortality as well as the artist’s, which is key to a work that is essentially autobiographical.
