Ian Hamilton Finlay

Ian Hamilton Finlay, Je vous salue Marat, 1989

Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925–2006) was at once an artist, poet, sculptor and landscape designer, who studied at the Glasgow School of Art before joining the Royal Army Service Corps in 1942. After the war, he produced paintings and poems while working as a shepherd, before founding Wild Hawthorn Press in 1961 with Jessie McGuffie, publishing contemporary poetry as well as his own. Within a few years, he established himself as one of the leading concrete poets in Britain, and his publications still play a key role in the diffusion of his visual work.
