Mario Merz

Mario Merz, Untitled, 1974

Mario Merz (1925–2003), one of the most influential artists of his generation, was acclaimed for his radical approach to materials and concepts that made him a central figure of the Arte Povera movement in the 1960s. Born in Milan, he grew up in Turin and started to study medicine before joining an antifascist group, which led to his being arrested and jailed. While in prison he experimented with drawing, and after being released he dedicated himself fully to painting.
